Meet Laura Denoux, Former NBC-6's The Biggest Loser Contestant
Laura Denoux, Heart Walk Director for the American Heart Association and Former contestant on NBC’s The Biggest Loser, season 7, will join GMSHRM Wellness Conference stellar line-up
Growing up as an only child with divorced parents, Laura learned how to take care of herself at a very young age. Her whole life, she had always been "the big girl," but after the loss of her father at age 15, eating became the vehicle to ease the pain; this then became the long road of unhealthy drive-thru binge eating and late night snacking. While attending Florida International University to study advertising and marketing, Laura juggled several jobs at the same time: she started her career as a top Cadillac Sales Director with Mary Kay cosmetics, acted as the head promoter for Miami’s famous Space Nightclub, and worked as a plus-size model for one of Miami’s top agencies. Hiding behind the image of a "plus-size" model wasn’t as easy as she thought; she could not eat anything she wanted just because she was “plus-sized.” When the agency informed her that clients wanted a model under a size 14, Laura knew her modeling career had come to an end.
When she finally reached a whopping 285 pounds, Laura decided it was time to turn in her size 24 jeans. Her saving grace came in the form of a reality TV show. In September 2008, she was selected out of over 100,000 applicants to be a contestant on season 7 of NBC’s The Biggest Loser, a show where overweight contestants work out, participate in challenges, and compete to lose weight for a chance to win $250,000. While on the show Laura lost over eighty pounds! Sadly, due to a hip and knee fracture (an injury that made Biggest Loser headlines), she had to trade in her running shoes for crutches.
Today, Laura is on the road to recovery and on a mission to continue her personal wellness goals. She can be found working as a spokesperson for the American Heart Association and Development Director for the Miami-Dade Heart Walk. Laura’s role is to recruit corporations to participate in American Heart Association’s wellness programs and the Miami-Dade Heart Walk, which promotes physical activity, eating healthy, and raising money to fight heart disease and stroke. Her life changing experience on the Biggest Loser makes this job the perfect fit. She will be leading Miami’s Heart Walk on Saturday, October 29, 2011 at Florida International University. Since her return from the show, Laura works behind the podium inspiring others with her story.
