Message from the 2011 GMSHRM President
GMSHRM welcomes 2011 President, Cindy Lau-Evans. 2011 programming starts with the Dinner Meeting on January 18, 2011 at the Hotel Sofitel with an insider's Economic Forecast for 2011. Hope to see you there.
Happy New Year!
Oh what feelings of hope and promise those words elicit when we hear them. It is a time rich with potential – a chance to finish projects and to continue established practices as well as an opportunity to create new traditions. World-wide, the New Year is a time for Recollection, Renewal and Optimism.
As the new GMSHRM President, I see the upcoming year as an exciting trip with many destinations along the way. There is a vision for the new year, and beyond, with no true end to the journey. I do know that the Board, myself included, will not be mere passengers just tagging along for the ride.
There are several new members on the 2011 Board of the Greater Miami chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (GMSHRM). This Board is one of the most diverse boards and is made up of professionals who come from different backgrounds, industries and life experiences. They are all individuals who are worth getting to know.
As a unit, the new Board is eager to do what most SHRM chapters are dedicated to do: Advance the HR profession and provide Service to human resource professionals. Board Members will do this through a re-energized focus on our membership. This will be manifested in a number of ways throughout the year, including the Board’s interaction with members, new member on-boarding, hospitality initiatives, more member involvement, give-a-ways, an increase in membership benefits and enhanced programming.
This year, we will continue to provide programming through our usual workshops and regular dinner meetings as well as programming with an international focus through our Global Forum meetings. Legal information will continue to be provided through the Ask Andy column and the annual Legal Update. A new offering for 2011 will be GMSHRM’s Wellness Conference & Expo.
The Wellness Conference and Expo will not be the only new event for 2011. The tradition of awarding the GMSHRM Diversity and Inclusion Awards will continue and, in addition, GMSHRM will add Awards in 2011 for HR Professional of the Year, HR Legend and Great Places to Work.
The New Year presents us with several opportunities to forge relationships and build partnerships. I have been speaking with a number of entities and companies and am pleased to inform you that GMSHRM will collaborate with a number of organizations including, but not limited to, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the Employer Support for the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), HRABC, HRPBC and the National Association of African Americans in HR (NAAAHR), South Florida. As the year unfolds, there will be announcements of interaction with additional groups as they are confirmed.
2011 programming starts with the Dinner Meeting on January 18, 2011 at the Hotel Sofitel with an insider’s Economic Forecast for 2011. Our speaker will be Juan del Busto, Regional Executive at the Miami Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. This is a great opportunity to invite guests, including your non-HR colleagues and executives, to a GMSHRM event.
Roberta Kressel, SVP, HR Team Lead at TD Bank and GMSHRM Past President, will be conducting the Installation Ceremony for the 2011 GMSHRM Board at the January Dinner Meeting. I invite you to join us on January 18th as the chapter begins another new and successful year.
Cindy J. Lau-Evans,
2011 President, Greater Miami SHRM
